Video of the day - This Many Boyfriends (I Should Be A) Communist

A few weeks ago I went up to Leeds to make a music video for the band This Many Boyfriends. It was a beautiful day, which was extra exciting since I was shooting it all on super-8.

We had a basic idea, but I wanted to keep it relatively loose. There's a fine line between being too organised and being too unprepared. I always feel it works best if you keep things a bit shambolic and just try to have fun. People enjoying themselves are so much more fun to watch than people deperately trying to look cool. And it's a music video. It doesn't have to make sense. So what if there's an accidental jump cut here and there. This happens more frequently when you're using super-8, especially if you don't have a shot list and don't write down what you've already shot.

A few hours later it was all done. Then the only thing you can do is wait. That's the horrible part, just waiting for two weeks. What if nothing comes out? What if there's something stuck in the camera gate?

Eventually, I got the film back and could relax. No problems, just beautifully saturated super-8.

You just can't beat super-8 on a sunny day. There's nothing quite like it.

Video of the day (Andrew Jackson Jihad - Gift Of The Magi 2)

This made me smile...a new video from Andrew Jackson Jihad. The song is Gift Of The Magi 2: Return Of The Magi and it's from their last album Knife Man which was out at some point last year. It's a simple idea, but it works really well and it's just fun to watch. And the song is ace!

Those guys are awesome! Bummer they're not playing at Plan-it-x Fest!

Any day that sees the release of a new Japanther video is a good day. And although Lil Taste is not one of my favourite tracks on the the most recent album, the video is still pretty awesome-looking. Who doesn't like puppets, eh?

Video of the day (Tigercats - Full Moon Reggae Party)

My dear friends in the super awesometastic band Tigercats are currently on tour in Europe. A few weeks ago, they released this beautiful video, hand-drawn and animated by singer/main song-writer Duncan Barrett.

It's a stunning piece of art. Be aware, tho. It contains cartoon nipples!

Music video of the day (The Wave Pictures - Eskimo Kiss)

I don't think I ever posted this one.

It's a music video I made back in January this year for The Wave Pictures. The song is Eskimo Kiss and it's from their upcoming album Long Black Cars, which should be out sometime soon-ish.

It was shot on super-8 negative film over a few hours one afternoon on Hampstead Heath in North London. The 'concept' was basically an adaptation of an old idea for a video, that I wanted to do for my own band...and then wanted to do for another band...and eventually ended up suggesting for this one. The original idea involved ninjas dancing with shopping trolleys, then it became brides pushing band members around in shopping trolleys and finally became people in animal masks pushing Jonny arond in a wheelbarrow. Not quite as exciting as ninjas and/or brides, but still...it worked out pretty well.

One mistake I always do with super-8 is that I can't keep the camera still and keep moving it around too much...and then you get those annoying horizontal lines.

But, but...here it is.

I'm not quite sure why I suddenly felt the urge to stick Nana Grizol back onto my ipod. Maybe it's because I've been listening alot to Defiance , Ohio (of which singer Theo Hilton is also a member) or maybe it's because winter has finally hit London and I just needed some warming music. It is BLOODY FREEZING outside. Or maybe it's just because there's been a Nana Grizol shaped hole on my ipod that I've just been ignoring. Whatever the reason...I just love this band, I really really do.

Video of the day (Säkert! - Can I)

So...Hello Saferide used to do the English songs and Säkert! used to do a similar-but-a-bit-darker thing in Swedish. But now, after getting inundated with emails and requests for translations, Annika Norlin gives us Säkert! på engelska (simply, Säkert in English). This is most excellent news if you don't speak Swedish.

The official website comes with a sweet warning - If you're Swedish and are reading - don't do it! You should be listening to the Swedish record.

And it's not like I would be missing out. I will have heard all these songs before. You see, all the songs on På Engelska are straight translations of songs from the two Säkert records, the self-titled one and its follow-up Facit.

But as much as I would like to listen to reasson, I just can't do it. I want to hear these versions. I'll just treat them like new songs. Of course it's not going to be the same. But, just like Bergman Rock is never going to be like Bob Hund and Kent in English is never going to be like the real Kent, it doesn't stop me from enjoying the music. And the song below is beautiful, wheteher you hear it in Swedish or in English.

Aww...a new Let's Whisper video. And it's just as lovely as the song.

The band are coming to the UK soon. For us Londoners they will be playing with Standard Fare at Zigfrid von Underbelly on Sunday 2nd October. It's a lovely venue and should be a great evening. See you there!

Today I found out that COLOR ME OBSESSED, a new documentary about The Replacements will be showing at the Raindance Film Festival in London in just a few weeks. This is VERY EXCITING! To celebrate I have two classic (and rarely seen) videos of the band playing on Saturday Night Live in 1986, a performance that would see them banned from the show. I'm not quite sure why, but it's an incredible performance. The songs played are Bastards Of Young and Kiss Me On The Bus.
